Authorities Investigating Allegations Of Abuse At Iowa Institution For Disabled.

October 15, 2020

The Des Moines (IA) Register (10/15) reports the Iowa Department of Human Services is investigating the Glenwood Resource Center, an institution for the severely disabled in Glenwood, Iowa. The facility, “which has been rocked by scandals twice in the past four years, is once again under investigation for a case of possible abuse of a severely disabled resident.” The state DHS “reported the situation to the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, which regulates health care facilities, and the U.S. Department of Justice, which already is investigating the Glenwood Resource Center over allegations of poor medical care and unethical research into sexual arousal.”

The AP (10/15) reports Iowa DHS Director Kelly Garcia “said in an interview Thursday that there is a ‘visible marking’ on a resident at the Glenwood Resource Center” and that the “injury couldn’t have been inflicted by another resident, because everyone who lives in the person’s house is immobile. Garcia said she asked the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation to help determine what happened.”
