California cuts power to more than 500,000 as high winds raise wildfire threat

One of the nation’s largest utilities began shutting off power early Wednesday to what could eventually be nearly 1 million Californians, using a relatively new and disruptive method to lessen wildfire risk in a state with intensifying weather extremes.
