CDC Expands Warnings For People At Risk For COVID-19.

June 25, 2020

Axios (6/25, Fernandez) reports the CDC “expanded its warnings Thursday to include more demographic groups at risk for the coronavirus such as younger people who are obese and who have underlying health problems.” The CDC “warns that among adults, risk of COVID-19 increases steadily as you age, not just those over 65.” People “who have a body mass index of 30 or higher” are at risk. Originally, the “warning was for people with a BMI of 40 or more.” Additionally, “being pregnant may increase one’s risk of being hospitalized and having severe illness.”

STAT (6/25, Branswell) reports Jay Butler, incident manager for the CDC’s Covid-19 response, said, “Younger people are in no way completely immune to the effects of SARS-CoV-2 nor are they at zero risk of severe manifestations. ... And among young people, that risk is elevated in those with underlying illness or health conditions, including things like diabetes or obesity.”
