September 29, 2022

STAT (9/29, Cohrs) reports, “New documents obtained by STAT” that CMS sent to lawmakers earlier in September “outline how Medicare is planning to build out a sizable new bureaucratic infrastructure to handle its new power to negotiate drug prices and penalize drugmakers for price hikes.” In the documents, CMS “proposes establishing a Medicare Drug Rebate and Negotiations Group with six divisions” along with “hiring 95 full-time employees.” In August, “Congress passed a law...that gives Medicare new authorities, as well as new funding to carry it out – $3 billion to start.” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra “called the powers ‘novel,’ and told lawmakers that they don’t fit into any current Medicare office.”
