Forthcoming Study Reveals Thefts Of Resident Medications Persist At Minnesota’s Assisted-Living Facilities.

July 30, 2022

The Minneapolis Star Tribune (7/30, Serres) reported “a soon-to-be-published study” shows that “more than 11,300 medications” which are primarily opioids “were stolen from at least 368 residents of nursing home and assisted-living sites across Minnesota.” Although the state “Department of Health...developed a long list of recommended preventative measures” in 2019, “law enforcement officials say investigating such thefts poses unique challenges, because of the large volume of drugs administered and the number of rotating staff who have access to them.” The forthcoming study’s “findings were based on a review of 107 state Department of Health investigation reports that substantiated drug thefts in Minnesota senior homes between 2013 and 2021.”
