Nursing Home Compare Lacks Clear Data On Safety, Study Suggests.

Reuters (11/6, Carroll) reports that according to new research published in the journal Health Affairs, CMS’ Nursing Home Compare website lacks metrics accurately indicating facility safety. According to senior author R. Tamara Konetzka of the University of Chicago, “Some standard patient safety measures – falls, UTIs, and pressure sores – are indeed on NHC. ... However, they don’t play a large role in determining the overall star levels, which is why we say that NHC does not reflect patient safety well.” Researchers also said the data can be difficult for consumers to find.
