OIG, HHS Call For Further Study Into Inappropriate Nursing Home Discharges.

November 22, 2021

Skilled Nursing News (11/22) says a report from the Office of the Inspector General and US Department of Health and Human Services warns that nursing home-initiated “inappropriate discharges” – those that “didn’t meet an acceptable reason under federal regulation” – may be increasing, and need further analysis. Danielle Fletcher, deputy regional inspector general at the OIG, said that “the lack of data and a lack of transparency about these numbers has made it very difficult to understand where there might be problems.” An upcoming study “set to publish tentatively in November 2022 will take a sample of nursing homes and document whether facilities followed regulations for facility-initiated discharges.”
