State Assisted Services For People With Disabilities Shut Down Amid Novel Coronavirus Outbreak.

April 5, 2020

The Los Angeles Times (4/5, Morain, Chabria) reports, “Before the coronavirus outbreak struck,” consumers “with intellectual and developmental disabilities received state assistance through a network of 21 regional centers that funded programs providing home health aides and other services. Those programs are now closed, and they could remain so for months.” The “programs allowed many of the severely disabled to live at home and get help from in-house aides and day care” and “allowed other people with disabilities to live in group homes.” The lack of services can be particularly hard on families since “disabled people with certain conditions, such as severe autism, can harm themselves or others, especially when routines are disrupted.”
