Recently, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a Final Rule updating HHS’ implementing regulation for Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act concerning programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. This final rule will help ensure that people with disabilities served by federally funded health and human services programs receive equitable care and treatment.

The final rule contains a number of edits to ensure consistency with updated judicial and legislative requirements, including those contained in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Additionally, the final rule contains new sections to help ensure nondiscrimination in health and human services programs and activities.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the new provisions in the HHS Section 504 Final Rule that impose new obligations on recipients of federal financial assistance.
  • Understand provisions in the HHS Section 504 Final Rule that build off of longstanding requirements under case law and other civil rights laws.
  • Understand the steps to take if you believe your civil rights under Section 504 have been violated.

Presenters:

  • Maggie Hart is a policy advisor in the Office for Civil Rights at HHS. She is an advocate, an attorney, and a woman with a disability. Prior to joining HHS OCR, Maggie was senior counsel with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs and, before that, she was a staff attorney at Disability Rights DC, the protection and advocacy organization for individuals with disabilities in the District of Columbia.
  • John Thompson is a policy advisor in the Office for Civil Rights at HHS. He has investigated allegations of civil rights violations in public and private entities across the United States, negotiated settlement agreements, and helped draft regulations and guidance concerning discrimination based on race, color, national origin, disability, sex, and age.

This webinar will offer live captioning and ASL Interpretation. Registration closes at 3:00 AM ET, June 27, 2024.
