AIDD Grantee Releases New Disability Employment Data

September 3, 2015

Meta-analysis reveals continued disparities in employment rates between people with and without disabilities.

The Institute for Community Inclusion at the University of Massachusetts has released the 2014 edition of the StateData: The National Report on Employment Service and Outcomes. The report, made possible in part by a grant from the Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, provides statistics over a 25-year period from several national datasets that address the status of employment and economic self-sufficiency for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

The report finds that although recent federal and state policy has paved the way to support opportunities for people with disabilities to have meaningful jobs in their communities, significant gaps remain.

For example:

  • The 2013 American Community Survey (ACS) estimates that 33.6% of working-age adults with disabilities are employed, compared with 72.0% of people without disabilities.

  • Data from the National Core Indicators (NCI) Project suggest that in 2012–2013, only 14.7% of working-age adults supported by state I/DD agencies were employed in integrated employment.

  • Community rehabilitation providers reported in 2010 that only 27% of individuals with I/DD supported by their organization received integrated employment services, including both individual job supports and group supported employment.
