Accessible Scales

Stepping on a scale and getting your weight is a regular part of many doctor or hospital visits. However, most scales are designed for use while standing and cannot be used by many wheelchair users and others with mobility concerns. As a result, many people with disabilities can go long periods without knowing or tracking their weight.

With the advent of the accessible scale, wheelchair users can remain in the wheelchair and roll onto a large platform scale, use a walker and ramp, or transfer (with assistance) from their wheelchair or walker to a seat on the scale.

The ADA requires that medical providers have an accessible scale with a platform large enough to fit a wheelchair and sloped surfaces to provide safe access to the scale platform. The scale platform should be large enough to accommodate different wheelchair sizes and provide maneuvering space to pull onto and off the scale.
