In June, ACL leads the nation’s observance of Elder Justice Awareness Month, a time to recognize the dignity, rights, and values of older adults in every community. It serves as a reminder that aging should be accompanied by respect, safety, and inclusion, not isolation or neglect. Across families, workplaces, healthcare systems, and public institutions, we all share a responsibility to ensure older adults are protected, heard, and empowered to live with independence and purpose.
Elder justice means creating communities where older adults can thrive free from exploitation, discrimination, and mistreatment. It calls attention to the importance of strong support systems, accessible resources, and meaningful social connections that help older adults maintain their well-being and quality of life. By promoting awareness and education, communities can better recognize warning signs of financial exploitation, neglect, and other harms while fostering environments rooted in compassion and accountability.
This month also highlights the importance of honoring the contributions older adults make every day. Older generations carry wisdom, experience, culture, and history that strengthen families and communities alike. Advocating for elder justice is not only about protection — it is about affirming the inherent worth of every person as they age and ensuring they continue to have opportunities to participate fully in society.
Through outreach, advocacy, and community engagement, Elder Justice Awareness Month encourages individuals and organizations to work together to build a culture of respect and support for older adults. Small actions — checking in on neighbors, supporting caregivers, promoting accessible services, and speaking up when concerns arise — can make a meaningful difference. Creating a safer and more inclusive future for older adults benefits entire communities and reflects our shared commitment to dignity across every stage of life.
