Webinar on Brain Injury, Child Welfare, and the Best Practice Guide

May 8, 2023

Wednesday, May 31, 2023 | 2:30-4:00 PM ET

Register for the webinar.

Join the Traumatic Brain Injury Technical Assistance and Resource Center (TBI TARC) to learn about the intersection of the child welfare system and how brain injury state systems can collaborate to meet the needs of family and children involved with the child welfare system. Guide contributors from ACL’s State Partnership Program Child Welfare Workgroup will share elements from "The Best Practice Guide: Information and Tools for State Agencies" and will discuss a variety of resources and tools to positively impact state welfare systems.

The child welfare system is complex, and procedures vary widely from state to state. Additionally, brain injuries are often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed within the child welfare system, which creates challenges for providers on the prevalence and complications of this issue and related symptoms. There are also parents who have experienced one or more brain injuries in their lifetime that are suspected to have committed abuse or neglect of children in their care. Recognizing the symptoms of brain injury will enable child welfare professionals to provide appropriate support for children and parents with a brain injury.

The webinar will be live-captioned and ASL-interpreted. If you require additional accommodations to participate, or if you have any questions about the webinar, please contact the TBI TARC at tbitarc@hsri.org.

ACL's Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) programs include the State Partnership Program and Protection and Advocacy (P&A) TBI Program (PATBI).The programs began in in 1996 (SPP) and 2002 (PATBI) to build a nationwide network that improves access to health, advocacy, and other TBI-related services. Since then, the programs have funded state agencies and organizations across the country that foster services and supports for all members of the TBI community, including survivors, caregivers, and professionals.
