ACL's National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) is announcing new funding opportunities for the Switzer Research Fellowships Program.

The purpose of the Switzer Research Fellowship Program is to build research capacity by providing support to highly qualified individuals — including individuals with disabilities — to conduct research on rehabilitation, independent living, and other experiences and outcomes of people with disabilities.

Fellows must conduct original research that is focused on the experiences and outcomes of people with disabilities in one or more of NIDILRR’s three outcome domains:

  1. Community living and participation
  2. Employment
  3. Health and function

The purpose of this Switzer Fellowship opportunity is to provide support to doctoral candidates as they conduct their dissertation research. NIDILRR plans to make five fellowship awards under this opportunity. Applicants must demonstrate their formal academic status as doctoral candidates. Fellowship awards will have one 12-month project period.

Contact linda.vo@acl.hhs.gov at NIDILRR if you have questions about the Switzer Program.

See Notice of Funding Opportunity: HHS-2025-ACL-NIDILRR-SFGE-0111, "Merit Switzer Research Fellowships for Doctoral Dissertation Research," posted November 5, 2024.

NIDILRR, part of ACL, generates new knowledge and promotes its effective use so that people with disabilities can perform activities of their choice in the community. NIDILRR also works to expand society’s capacity to provide full opportunities and accommodations for people with disabilities.
