In May 2024, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services submitted the “Aging in the United States: A Strategic Framework for a National Plan on Aging” report to Congress. The report laid the groundwork for a coordinated effort — across the private and public sectors — to create a national set of recommendations for advancing healthy aging and age-friendly communities that value and truly include older adults. Developed by leaders and experts from 16 federal agencies and departments working together through the Interagency Coordinating Committee (ICC) on Healthy Aging and Age-Friendly Communities, the report also reflected input from community partners and leaders in the aging services network.
On June 10, 2024, ACL hosted a public webinar to provide an overview of the Strategic Framework. In December 2024, ACL published WHAT WE HEARD: Initial Feedback on The Strategic Framework for a National Plan on Aging, which summarized input received to date that will inform the development of the national recommendations for healthy aging. Since then, the ICC has continued collecting feedback on the Strategic Framework from older adults and communities across the country to ensure the healthy aging recommendations focus on the most important issues and solutions to best meet the needs of older adults. The recommendations will also aim to advance best practices for service delivery, support development and strengthening of partnerships within and across sectors, identify solutions for removing barriers to health and independence for older adults, and more.
