New Research Funding Opportunities for Minority-Serving Institutions

January 23, 2024
Applications due March 18, 2024

ACL's National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) is announcing a new funding opportunity for the Field-Initiated Projects (FIP) Program for minority-serving institutions.

The purpose of the FIP Program is to develop methods, procedures, and rehabilitation technology that maximize the full inclusion and integration of individuals with disabilities, especially individuals with the most severe disabilities, into society, employment, independent living, family support, and economic and social self-sufficiency. Another purpose is to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

These funding opportunities, as authorized by Section 21 (b)(2)(A) of the Act, aim to improve the capacity of minority institutions to conduct high-quality disability and rehabilitation research and development. A minority entity is defined as a historically Black college or university (HCBU), a Hispanic-serving institution of higher education, an American Indian tribal college or university, or another institution of higher education whose minority student enrollment is at least 50%. NIDILRR is especially interested in applications from individual minority entities that have historically been underrepresented in the federal research arena.

NIDILRR, part of ACL, generates new knowledge and promotes its effective use so that people with disabilities can perform activities of their choice in the community. NIDILRR also works to expand society’s capacity to provide full opportunities and accommodations for people with disabilities.
