Safety Tips for Wildfires and Hurricanes

August 12, 2021

The United States has been experiencing intense wildfires and is expecting an increase in hurricane activity during the coming months. Because these disasters can disproportionately impact people with disabilities and older adults, ACL has compiled preparedness resources for a variety of emergencies on our website: acl.gov/emergencypreparedness

Tips on staying safe during wildfires from the CDC:

  • Protect yourself from smoke by keeping it outside and reducing exposure.
  • Keep track of wildfires in the area so that you can be ready to evacuate.
  • Evacuate safely by having a plan, including meeting up with family members.

Tips on hurricane preparedness from Ready.gov:

  • Make an emergency plan with a supply kit in case of evacuation.
  • Know your evacuation zone and routes.
  • Follow warnings and local alerts.
  • If you are a person with a disability or an older adult, get additional tips or help on preparing for emergencies in advance.
