The next Interagency Committee on Disability Research (ICDR) Lunch & Learn webinar will discuss strategies for participatory action research with people with disabilities. At the end of the presentation, there will a 15-minute question-and-answer session with the audience.

During this webinar, participants will learn about Memory Connections, an ACL-funded initiative through Senior Services Inc. in North Carolina. Memory Connections is a multi-faceted project that offers support, creativity, education, and engaging activities for people living with dementia and their caregivers.

This webinar will discuss statistics, stigmas, and deterrents of Black male caregiving. This webinar will also provide supportive resources and best practices for Black male caregivers and their families.

The centerpiece of the joint meeting will be the introduction and swearing-in of new council members as they start their three-year terms. You’ll also hear from federal leaders and partners about the way forward for the work of the councils, a preview of the next joint advisory council meeting (September 19, 2023), and more.

During the webinar, Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) from AARP will highlight the Affordable Connectivity Program and how the ACL-funded aging network and partner organizations can connect more consumers to affordable broadband. The Association of Assistive Technology Act Programs (ATAP) will then spotlight state Assistive Technology Act programs and how the aging network and partner organizations can work with these programs to connect consumers to assistive technology.

ACL is awarding grants to 17 University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (UCEDDs) to begin a new five-year cycle to address issues, find solutions, and conduct research to advance the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) and their families.

The next Interagency Committee on Disability Research (ICDR) Lunch & Learn webinar is a presentation of a new report from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS): “2023 Disparities in Health Care in Medicare Advantage Associated with Dual Eligibility or Eligibility for a Low-Income Subsidy and Disability.”

The webinar will review Appendix G – Safeguards in the HCBS Waiver application and the protections this appendix provides for participants. The presentation will cover the part of the waiver application where the state outlines its process for responding to critical incidents, safeguards it has in place around the use of restraints and seclusion, and its protocols for medication management, if applicable. The webinar will also cover how stakeholders can have an impact on the application and why the protections outlined in Appendix G are important.
