Culturally Competent Direct Care: Meeting the Long-term Services and Supports (LTSS) Needs of Diverse Dually Eligible Beneficiaries

Nearly half of individuals dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid need LTSS for help with daily tasks such as dressing, bathing, and eating. Direct care workers provide most of this help. This event will review strategies for providing services with cultural sensitivity and it will discuss training direct care workers to achieve cultural competence. Speakers will share strategies for meeting LTSS needs in a variety of settings and while respecting diverse preferences. A direct care worker, along with a beneficiary, will share experiences and recommendations on providing care.

Alzheimer’s disease, the most common type of dementia, affects an estimated 5.8 million Americans. In 2019, Medicare and Medicaid will spend an estimated $195 billion caring for people with dementia. The emotional and physical burden of dementia on individuals, families, and caregivers is immense. This interactive webinar will share best practices and guidelines for diagnosing and assessing dementia among older adults who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid. It will also provide an overview of current evidence-based treatments. Speakers will share  experiences and lessons learned, including the impact of different approaches on older adults with dementia and their caregivers.
