WEAAD: Weekend of Prayer and Trauma-Informed Practices Webinar

May 15, 2023

WEAAD Activities: National Weekend of Prayer and Trauma-Informed Practices Webinar

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is one month away. As you prepare to raise awareness and take action for elder justice, we wanted to highlight two upcoming activities being organized by the ACL-funded National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA).

National Weekend of Prayer and Action for Elder Justice

National Weekend of Prayer and Action for Elder Justice. Honoring Older Adults in observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 16. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day: Building Strong Support for Elders. Safe Havens. National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA).

This year, NCEA will be commemorating WEAAD with a full week of themes, resources, and activities — beginning with the National Weekend of Prayer and Action for Elder Justice from June 9-11.

The weekend is a joint effort of NCEA and Safe Havens Interfaith Partnership Against Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse. To help you and your faith community get involved, they have developed this short guide on engaging faith communities during WEAAD as well as some non-denominational prayers honoring older adults.

In addition, the Safe Havens Interfaith Partnership Against Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse website has more resources on elder abuse designed especially for faith communities and service providers who are partnering with faith communities.

Finally, NCEA just released a podcast episode on relationships between faith communities, older adults, and aging and domestic violence service providers.

Webinar: Trauma-Informed Practices to Address Abuse and Build Resilience

WEAAD 2023 Webinar: Trauma-Informed Practices to Address Abuse and Build Resilience. June 15, 2023. 11:30 AM PT. 2:30 PM ET. NCEA. SAGE: Advocacy and Services for LGBT Elders. Los Angeles Caregiver Resource Center. Diverse Elders Coalition. USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care.

Register for the webinar.

Preventing and addressing elder abuse and building resilience in older adults requires a person-centered and trauma-informed approach. Older adults are exposed to multiple types of traumas over the lifetime, as well as older adult-specific traumas, including the loss of spouse/partner, social isolation, chronic illness, change in living environment, and elder abuse. Trauma affects individuals in different ways. This panel webinar will discuss the cumulative and complex trauma histories of diverse older adults, how trauma relates to elder abuse, and strategies to provide culturally-responsive and trauma-informed support.

Speakers:

  • Laura Mosqueda, National Center on Elder Abuse, Keck School of Medicine of USC
  • Sherrill Wayland, SAGE
  • Donna Benton, Los Angeles Caregiver Resource Center
  • Lauren Pongan, Diverse Elders Coalition
  • Elizabeth Avent, USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology
