Organizations across federal government and the disability community have shared many great resources, blogs, and fact sheets to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. We're compiling them on our 2022 ADA anniversary page, but we thought we'd share some of the highlights in case you missed them.

On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law; this landmark civil rights law affirmed the inherent dignity of every person, regardless of disability. The ADA prohibits discrimination by local and state governments, provides standards for privately owned businesses and commercial facilities, stands against discrimination in the workplace, and ensures equal access to healthcare, social services, transportation, and telecommunications.

On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law, establishing a national expectation of accessibility, inclusion and full participation – and creating a promise of justice and equity – for disabled people of all ages. The ADA makes clear that people with disabilities have the same rights as people without disabilities to live, work, and participate in their communities.

The Biden-Harris Administration has launched a new initiative to expand the availability of at-home tests that are more accessible for people who are blind or have low vision. The tests work with a compatible Bluetooth-enabled smartphone and free app to provide users with audible instructions and audible test results. Read more about the tests.

The anniversary of the Olmstead decision reminds us of the importance of the work we do in ACL’s Office of Independent Living Programs, with centers for independent living (CILs) helping deliver on the promise of Olmstead. Designed and operated by people with disabilities, CILs across the nation provide independent living services for people with disabilities in their communities.
