ACL's National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) is announcing a new grant award for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) National Network Collaborative Research Project. The planned project period for this grant is September 1, 2022 – August 31, 2027, with an estimated funding amount of $500,000 per year.
Under this particular priority, the grantee must conduct research that generates new knowledge of national significance related to ADA implementation and compliance. They must also conduct research in one or more areas of the ADA. These areas may include, but are not limited to, research on specific titles of the ADA, research on ADA issues in specific industries, or research on ADA issues that are relevant to people with specific types of disabilities.
This grant was awarded to the Memorial Herman Health System (Houston, TX) to address participation disparities experienced by people with disabilities in community living, community participation, and economic equity. The grantee will examine existing participation disparities using large population level datasets; analyze findings specific to people with disabilities from underrepresented communities and intersecting identities to document disparities of diverse people with disabilities and communities; and provide online access of such information to the public. They will also design an online, peer mentoring intervention program to create citizen scientists and change agents from diverse disability groups and communities who will learn how to make sense of this disparities research, and use the findings to advocate for systems and policy changes at national, state, and community levels.
The grantee will work collaboratively with the 10 ADA Regional Centers and the ADA Knowledge Translation Center, along with a national network of disability organizations, to address participation disparities over the next five years.
