ACL Awards Grant for National Center on Elder Abuse’s Resource Center

October 18, 2017

The Administration for Community Living recently awarded a new grant totaling $950,638 for the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) to Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC). This is a three-year continuation grant. NCEA, in partnership with key stakeholders, will build upon a strong foundation to engage professionals and empower communities to establish, strengthen, and support just and thriving societies working together to eliminate elder abuse.

The goal of NCEA is to improve the national response to elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. NCEA accomplishes this by gathering, housing, and disseminating current information, stimulating and identifying new approaches, as well as detecting and addressing gaps in the field.

The NCEA Resource Center will provide a national source of practical information to support federal, state, and local efforts to prevent, identify, and effectively respond to elder abuse. The Resource Center will provide information and technical support, translate the latest research in the field, and disseminate best practices for state, local, and tribal practitioners. NCEA will also provide technical assistance on developing effective prevention, intervention, and response efforts to address elder abuse.

NCEA has accomplished a number of activities in past years. In collaboration with the Frameworks Institute, they developed a Communications Strategy and Toolkit designed to introduce the topic of elder abuse as a community concern, not an individual issue, to tell a story and advance policy that will prevent abuse. NCEA implemented a successful reframed World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2017 campaign. They also incorporated the newly developed communication strategy in the WEAAD 2017 campaign materials.
