Twenty nine years ago today, our country took an important step toward affirming the dignity and civil right of people with disabilities when President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law.  

Since its passage 29 years ago today, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has helped the United States become a healthier and more inclusive nation by increasing access and equality for our largest minority group: people with disabilities.

In the U.S., more than 34 million family caregivers provide physical, emotional, and financial support for someone age 50 or older. It is a demanding role that can take a toll on a caregiver’s health and well-being. Support services like respite care, counseling, training, and support groups can improve well-being and the ability to manage caregiving responsibilities. These services are most effective when they meet the cultural and linguistic preferences of family caregivers.

What a great day at ACL! We just finished a full day of back-to-back meetings with executive directors from Centers for Independent Living, State Independent Living Councils, and state designated entities from as far away as Washington state and as close by as Maryland (and many, many states in between). And before the week is out, ACL leadership and staff will have met with independent living program leaders from more than half the states in our nation.
